Organizing Made Simple

Wow, it feels good to be back! These last few weeks have been hard. Really hard. Baby girl started daycare, got sick (and passed it on to us), and went through the 4 month sleep regression. This mama is TIRED. Now that we’re all on the mend and starting to get some sleep again, it feels good to get back to writing.

Let’s talk about the list. We all have it – the never ending list of home projects we dread tackling. Maybe you need to organize your kitchen, or go through your clothes, or clean out a linen closet. Sometimes just the thought of these projects becomes so overwhelming we’re too scared to start. I’ve been there! But today we’re getting started. Here are my tips for simplifying any organization project.


We’re doing this, and we’re starting with ONE project. Pick the project on your list that will make the most impact once it’s organized. Do you spend the most time in your kitchen? Or maybe your dresser drawers stress you out every time you open them. Whatever space will make you the happiest once it’s finished, start there!


Chances are, you don’t have an entire day to dedicate to completing your project, and that’s ok! Break it down into small, achievable goals that will be quicker and easier to complete. If your project is your master closet, make a list of smaller goals within your closet. Then tackle the project one step at a time. For example, my master closet list would look something like this:

– Shoes
– Accessories
– Swimwear
– Clothing


Now that you’ve decided where to start – remove, purge, and clean! Start by taking everything out of the space, regardless of whether you’re keeping it or not. Once you have everything out, sort through and decide what you’ll keep, toss, or donate. Next, clean! Wipe down shelves, vacuum, etc. You don’t want to put everything back into a dirty cabinet or closet.


Once you’ve removed everything, you can easily see what you have and how much space you’ve got to work with. Start planning out where things will go. Do you need drawer dividers or bins or cookware organizers? Get an idea of what products you need before you go to the store. It’ll save you from overspending.


Last but not least, put everything away and enjoy your space!
